India is the second highest populous country in the world. A number of famous Indian women are there in India and in the world. Here I am sharing the brief introduction of 10 famous women of India.

  1. Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi was a very powerful Indian politician who was born on 19 November 1917 in Allahabad, India. She was the daughter of Jawahar Lal Nehru who was the first prime minister of India. She became the third Prime Minister of India. She was the first female prime minister of India. She died on 31 October 1984 when she was assassinated in New Delhi, India.

  1. Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu was an Indian poet and a political activist who was born on 13 February 1879 in Telangana, India. She is also known as ‘the Nightingale of India’.  She got her higher studies from England where she fought also in suffrage movement. She became the Governor of the United Provinces in 1947.

  1. Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar is an Indian playback singer and music director who was born on 28 September 1929 in Madhya Pradesh, India. She has sung more than one thousand songs in different national and international languages. She has won Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of India, in 2001. She has won multiple national and international awards in her life.

  1. Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla was born on 17 March 1962 in Haryana, India. She had a keen interest in aeroplanes and astronomy from her childhood. She moved to United States of America in 1982 for higher studies in Aerospace Engineering. She became US citizen in 1991 and joined NASA Astronaut Corps. She became the first Indian origin woman to go to space on 19 November 1997. She died on 01 February 2003 in a space disaster.

Mary Kom is a world famous amateur boxer who was born on 24 November 1982 in Manipur, India. She has won eight World Championship medals and she became the first India female boxer who won the gold medal at Asian Games in 2014 and gold medal at Commonwealth games in 2018. In 2016, she was nominated as the member of Rajya Sabha which is the upper house of parliament of India.

Sania Mirza is an Indian Tennis player who was born on 15 November 1986 in Mumbai, India. She has won six Grand Slam titles. She is highest ranked Tennis player of India. She was appointed as the UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. Her name was listed in ‘100 most influential people in the world’ by Time magazine 2016.

Priyanka Chopra is an Indian actress, film producer, model and singer who was born on 18 July 1982 in Jharkhand, India. She won the Miss World 2000 pageant. Government of India honoured her with Padam Shri in 2016. Her name was listed in ‘100 most influential people in the world’ by Time magazine 2016. She has won a number of awards in acting.

Indra Nooyi was born on 28 October 1955 in Tamil Nadu, India. In 1978 she moved to United States of America for Management studies. She joined PepsiCo in 1994 and became CEO in 2006. She has been serving in boards of Amazon and of the International Cricket Council. In 2015, she was ranked at 13 number in the Forbes list of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women and she was ranked on second most powerful woman in the list of The 19 Most Powerful Women in Business by Forbes. She has won a number of international awards.

9. Kiran Mazumdar – Shaw

Kiran Mazumdar – Shaw is an Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist who was born on 23 March 1953 in Karnataka, India. She is the founder and chairperson of Biocon Limited which is a biotechnology company based in Bangalore, India. Her name was listed at 68th place in the most powerful women in the world by Forbes.

10. Saina Nehwal

Saina Nehwal is a badminton player of India. She was born on 17 March 1990 in Haryana, India. She has won a number of international titles and she has represented India in Olympics for three times. She won bronze medal in Olympics. She has won multiple awards in her life.
